Data Preservation, Metadata, and Interoperability Working Group

The Data Preservation, Metadata, and Interoperability Working Group will

  1. identify, evaluate, select, and implement the standards, tools, procedures, and internal policies needed to support data curation and preservation and metadata management;
  2. exercise the standards, procedures, and tools deployed at the initial system implementation;
  3. develop a plan for a comprehensive internal summative evaluation to determine the effectiveness of tools, procedures, and systems.

The working group functions as two subgroups: One addressing Preservation topics and the other, Metadata topics. The former subgroup has met and the latter will have its first meeting this year.

Working Group Leaders

  • John Kunze, California Digital Library, University of California
  • Jane Greenberg, School of Information and Library Science, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

Preservation Subgroup Members

  • Dave Vieglais, University of Kansas, DataONE

Metadata Subgroup Members

  • Sarah Callaghan, British Atmospheric Data Centre
  • Greg Janee, Digital library research specialist, Earth Research Institute, University of California Santa Barbara
  • Nassib Nassar, Senior Research Scientist, Senior Research Scientist RENCI, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

Current Projects

The Metadata subgroup will be forming in 2012 with new co-chair Jane Greenberg. On the task lists are to constitute the group and to combine metadata requirements from CCIT with other relevant sources of minimal metadata requirements, including preservation, citation, discovery, as well as spreadsheet publication and data paper publication. The main overall task will be to design and implement a metadata vocabulary maintenance framework in consultation with the Dublin Core and DataCite metadata initiatives.

Previous Projects

In 2010 the Preservation subgroup held a workshop in Chicago, the result of which was a detailed preservation strategy statement for DataONE. In 2011 the subgroup produced summary guidelines and presentation materials for the DataONE External Advisory Board meeting, the DataONE reveiw by NSF, and the VDC Preservation Strategy annual report for INTEROP. Members also co-conducted Citation and Preservation breakouts at DUG meeting in Santa Fe.
