DataONE provides the distributed framework (comprised of Member Nodes and Coordinating Nodes), sound management, and robust technologies that enable long-term preservation of diverse multi-scale, multi-discipline, and multi-national observational data. This framework would not be possible without extensive partnerships with other institutions, agencies, data repositories, observatories, libraries and sponsors. Information on the partner organizations affiliated with DataONE Investigators can be found here.

Memberships and Collaborations

DataONE is a level 3 service provider with XSEDE.

DataONE joined the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) in 2011 as a Type I partner. Type I partners are primarily distributors of satellite and ground-based data sets, as well as standardized products derived from those data. The scope of DataONE is broadly defined as Earth and environmental sciences and includes all stakeholder groups that interact in this domain; researchers, educators, librarians, data managers, computer scientists, students, policy makers and citizen scientist among others. There is direct overlap with the community of individuals and expertise supported by ESIP. Many ESIP member organizations are DataONE partners and participation in ESIP allows for increased collaboration, dialogue and sharing of information, services and expertise

Research Data Alliance Logo

DataONE is a member of the Organisational Assembly of the Research Data Alliance (RDA). DataONE, as the foundation for new innovative environmental science through a distributed framework and sustainable cyberinfrastructure meeting the needs of science and society for open, persistent, robust, and secure access to well-described and easily discovered Earth observational data, shares similar goals of RDA. The mission of RDA is to build the social and technical bridges that enable open sharing of data.

DMPTool Logo

DataONE was a founding member of the DMPTool during initial development and is still active in the DMPTool Steering Committee.

DataONE is funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) under a Cooperative Agreements, Phase 1 Grant #ACI-0830944, Phase 2 Grant #ACI-1430508.
