Are you preparing a research proposal or initiating a research project? Increasingly, funders are requiring that proposals and funded projects include a comprehensive plan that describes how the data will be effectively managed during the life of the project and beyond.
Individuals from DataONE, ORNL DAAC and USGS will be running a 4 hour workshop at the ESA meeting in Austin TX on data management. Designed with early career scientists in mind, the purpose of this workshop is to give attendees a set of practical tools for organizing and sharing their data through all parts of the research cycle. Who: This course is for MS students and professionals with a BS in biology, geology, ecology, or other environmental sciences, environmental engineering, geography or science librarianship
Reichman, Jones, and Schildhauer write about the technological and sociological challenges and opportunities of an open data model for ecology in Science (http://dx.doi.org/10.1126/science.1197962). The authors discuss the technological approaches to issues of data dispersion, heterogeneity, and provenance in ecology, and show how a federated data system like DataONE can play a pivotal role in open, reproducible science.
Understanding patterns of bird occurrence at continental scales has long been one of eBird's fundamental challenges and has also been a focus of the DataONE Exploration,Visualization and Analysis Working Group. The results of this work are highlighted on the eBird website.
