It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Bob Sandusky on Friday April 10 after his decade-long fight with cancer. We have lost a great friend and colleague who has been a part of the DataONE community since before DataONE began.

The GRIL - the Groupe de Recherche Interuniversitaire en Limnologie (Interuniversity Research Group in Limnology) - is a research group with a focus on freshwater ecology (limnology) based in the province of Québec, Canada. The GRIL consists of over 50 regular members, who are professors across 10 Québec universities as well as their graduate students, postdocs, and technicians.

Congratulations to our colleagues at the San Diego Supercomputing Center, ESIP and University of Illinois Urbana Champaign on their new NSF award to host the EarthCube office (ECO) for the next three years. This collaboration represents an excellent opportunity to further support the geoscience community with computational infrastructure and integrate the Earthcube community with the highly successful community platform developed by ESIP over the last 20 years.

IEDA (Interdisciplinary Earth Data Alliance) is a community-based data facility supporting research in the earth, ocean and polar sciences. IEDA represents an alliance of NSF-funded data repositories for research data in geochemistry/petrology (EarthChem Library, ECL), marine geoscience (Marine-Geo Digital Library, MGDL) and from Antarctica (US Antarctic Program Data Center, USAP-DC).

A new Management Team has been identified to lead DataONE into 2020 and beyond. The DataONE project has flourished under the insightful leadership of Bill Michener and the DataONE Leadership Team, and has been managed for the last nine years under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation DataNet program.

Publications have long maintained a citation standard for research papers, ensuring credit for cited work and ideas. Tracking use of data collections, however, has remained a challenge. DataONE is pleased to share our latest effort in overcoming this barrier and in demonstrating data reuse with new data usage and citation metrics.

ESS-DIVE (Environmental System Science Data Infrastructure for a Virtual Ecosystem) serves as a repository for hundreds of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded research projects focusing on terrestrial and subsurface ecosystems. Designed as a scalable framework, ESS-DIVE incentivizes data providers to contribute well-structured, high-quality data and enables the user community to easily build data processing, synthesis, and analysis capabilities using those data.
