Oceanographic data more broadly discoverable as the Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) Program becomes the 37th Member Node to join the DataONE federation.
The Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) Program is an NSF-supported repository for the environmental sensor data that are routinely acquired by the U.S. oceanographic research fleet. The academic fleet supports hundreds of cruises around the world each year on scientific expeditions ranging from the deep oceans to coasts and estuaries to the Great Lakes. This body of knowledge adds to the over 900,000 publicly readable data objects discoverable via DataONE, with the potential to generate new science across Member Nodes.
Each vessel in the fleet delivers a package of data from geophysical, oceanographic, meteorological, and navigational sensors to R2R at end of each cruise, which is then organized and documented for deposit to long-term archives. R2R provides a suite of supporting services including a master catalog with curated metadata and a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for each cruise; an inventory of original field datasets from the vessel’s resident sensors; quality assessment of selected data types; near-real-time processed data from the Shipboard Automated Meteorological and Oceanographic System (SAMOS); post-field/processed data including shiptrack navigation; support for at-sea event logging; and links to related publications and content at partner repositories.
More information about R2R and other DataONE Member Nodes can be found at http://www.dataone.org/current-member-nodes.
About DataONE: DataONE enables universal access to data and facilitates researchers in fulfilling their need for data management and in providing secure and permanent access to their data. DataONE offers the scientific community a suite of tools and training materials that cover all aspects of the data life cycle from data collection, to management, analysis and publication.
About R2R: R2R is supported by the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, and Schmidt Ocean Institute. R2R works in collaboration with the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) and the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) to develop best practices for data stewardship in the US oceanographic community.
