DataONE welcomes The Research Workspace as its newest Member Node

Thursday, August 3, 2017

The Research Workspace has joined DataONE as a Member Node, making it easy for Research Workspace users to export and archive their project data to the DataONE Network. The Research Workspace is a web-based platform that allows scientific researchers and organizations to manage their projects and data products through the entire data management lifecycle. Though designed to be a generalized data management platform, the system is primarily used by groups and individuals working in the geophysical, biological, and ecological domains.

The Research Workspace facilitates data management through all stages of scientific programs by letting stakeholders organize datasets into different projects. A robust metadata editor is integrated into the Workspace to capture detailed documentation on users' datasets and produce ISO 19110 and 19115-2 metadata outputs. Projects may be shared with individuals, research campaigns, and organizations to give administrators and principal investigators control over how their data is accessed.

The collaborative nature of the Research Workspace makes it ideal in capturing the process of transforming raw data results into new insights. Users may identify datasets that are suitable for sharing, and allow other users to leverage them for their own data products and visualizations. This also enables program administrators to track data and metadata collection progress throughout the program lifecycle.

The Research Workspace features a cloud-based Jupyter notebook integration to let users write numerical workflows and scripts from anywhere in the world that leverage their uploaded datasets. This allows computationally-intense scripts to be developed and run from any web-capable device, such as a laptop or Chromebook.
